Just completed my registration for the 2009 Fireweed. My goal in 2008 was to finish. I surprised myself by finishing in 11:50, good for 7th place overall.
My goal for 2009 is to cut 51 minutes off of that time, so I can see that magic 10 hour mark. Seeing as how I started 5 minutes late in 2008, that’s really only cutting 46 minutes off. Easy, right? With some stress reduction, dropping some body weight, and some equipment changes (getting an actual TT bike, installing wheel covers and a new saddle, as well as changing from a 12-25 to a 11-27) I think it’s more than doable. My training plan is done, I’m riding earlier this year, and I have a greater understanding (and appreciation) for training with power. (as I type this, I just got a twitter update from Lance Armstrong that Taylor Phinney just “slayed” the kilo in 1:01. The kid’s good. WR’s are going to fall….)
My crew, Megan and Isaac, simply rocked the house last year. For whatever reason, they’ve both signed on for another year. I’m not going to question it whatsoever. They both profess that they didn’t have a spare second even to pee, so I know I worked them pretty hard in 2008. Having driven support for Rocky in 2007 for his solo 400 victory, I know how much work it is to support a rider, and it makes me appreciate their work that much more. Like I said last year–there’s no fucking way I could have done it without them.
So, now it’s a little more real….it’s on, baby.
